Utilizing Social Media for a Nonprofit Organization:
A Fundraiser for the Spring Hill College International Service Immersion Program
During the Fall 2014 Semester of my senior year at Spring Hill I completed an integrated media campaign for my CMM 495: Senior Seminar course. This course is designed as a senior capstone project for all participants in the Spring Hill College Communication Arts program. I decided to do an online fundraiser and social media campaign for the Spring Hill College International Service Immersion Program (ISIP). This program was very close to my heart, having participated twice in the program. Over Mardi Gras break of Spring 2014 I traveled to El Cercado, Dominican Republic and worked with International Partners in Mission with a local parish near the Haiti border, and over Mardi Gras break of Spring 2015 I will be traveling to Punta Gorda, Belize to work with the local Jesuit Parish St. Peter Claver. Through my involvement with this program I noticed a need for an online presence, and created the online giving campaign. The donation page can be found at: badgernet.shc.edu/isip.
Abstract
This project was created to explore a possible relationship between nonprofit organizations, social media and online giving. The project focused on the Spring Hill College International Service Immersion Program (ISIP). The project planner took an administrative role on the program’s social media presence and built a donation web page. Then, the project planner aimed to utilize the social media for fundraising purposes and encourage a cross over from the social media to the donation page. The project was implemented during a seven-and-half week timeline. Goals were established for social media development and growth, online donations and data analytics. Once the project was concluded, the planner assessed its success using quantitative research and analytical reasoning. At the conclusion of this project, it is the planner’s goal to discover several methods for expanding social media awareness and creating links between social media and online giving pages. At the conclusion of the project, the online giving fundraiser had raised $2,105 for the Spring Hill ISIP program. *Update: As of December 1, 2014 the online giving campaign had raised $3,635.
